Port de Soller

The origin of this town is unknown, although they presume that it is very old because prehistoric artifacts have been found. In the thirteenth century under Arab power it was known as Port of Santa Catalina forming part of the territory of Sulyar (Valley of Gold). Years later after the conquering of Mallorca by King Jaime I the Conquerer it became Reign of Aragón changing the name to the Port of Sóller.

The Port was the maritime district of the northeast coast, which stretches from the Island Dragonera up to the Cap of Formentor. The Port was always of crucial importance since the thirteenth century it was used as a forced turnpike on the journeys between the island and other continents. It witnessed how its lands suffered the changes of each stage of history. Since 1399 a trade of supplies started (mostly produce from local agriculture) and raw materials destined for the main land Spain, South of France, Italy, North Africa, Puerto Rico and other not so distant destinations. During all those years they were threatened by continuous attacks by bandit Arabs who plundered the whole coast. This was the reason why they had to put up defences (construction of towers, installation of military etc) until the abolition of piracy. From these invasions we are left with a simulated invasion of Arabs which is celebrated annually by the locals of the Port. This is the origin of the 'Es Firo' Festival one of the nost charismatic Festivals of the Region. We are also left with a few look-out towers that remind us of the invasions. Nowadays because of where the towers are situated they have become one of the most beautiful excursions (precious views) of the area especially the 'Torre Picada'.

In the Modern Age (period from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution) due to the growth of the shipping trade, the Port of Sóller had an extensive fleet of merchant ships, fishing boats and various regular shipping lines (some of them passenger). In the eighteenth century the Port had to be fitted out with new quays and installations. All this development of the commerical port was foiled by the begining of the civil war 1936 - 1939. The Ports quays were militerised, building several constructions to be used as a Base for supplies. Later the Military School of Submarines and the Center of Mine Dredging were created. From 1971 all of this was reduced to a small naval detachment without arms.

After the civil war the shipping trade was practically none existant but was reactivated by the growth of tourism. The whole region was transformed by the construction of hotels, restaurants, bars and other trades. The service trade grew where industry had deteriorated in Sóller. This Boom was due to the return of tourism in the eighties. After the boom of the eighties some of the hotels and restaurants had to close. The remaining had to modernise their installations and services to offer the quality that was demanded of them.

Deià

kk

Deià lies between Soller and Valldemossa on the rugged north west coast of Mallorca. It has a well established reputation as being a magnet for artists, poets and other creative types. Its most famous resident was the English writer Robert Graves, author of 'I, Claudius' amongst others. After his death here in 1985 he was buried in the small cemetery behind the village church.

On arrival by car, park in one of the pay and display car parks and head up to the village Church of Sant Joan Baptista via the town hall (Ajuntament) building which has a map and some Deia tourist information available for visitors. Admire the beautiful mountain views all around including the peak of the Puig de Teix which climbs from the sea to reach a height of 1064m where it looks down on the village of Deia and and its quaint shingle beach at Cala de Deia. This can be reached on foot from the village or by car following the sign on the road heading out to the north.

Valldemossa

Valldemossa lies 15km north of Palma slightly inland from the rugged north west coast of Mallorca. It's a pretty town surrounded by mountains though much of its charm is destroyed by the daily bus loads of visitors who arrive on coach trips to visit the Cartuja de Valldemossa (€8 entrance fee).
This monastery was the home of the composer Frederic Chopin and his lover George Sand during the winter of 1838-39.

Sand wrote a book called 'A Winter in Mallorca' which described the awful time she spent on the island. Surprisingly the book was translated into several languages and is still widely available on the island.

Heading a kilometre out of town you'll come to a sign for Port de Valldemossa which takes you on a 6km drive of hairpin bends down to a little bay where you can have a seafood lunch at the Es Port reataurant. The wild sea is some sight down here on windy days.
